Who we are
The Northern Beaches Drone Crew was formed to complement the existence of DRA Outer Heaven, who's home grounds are located in western Sydney. There are many current and future drone pilots who reside in or near the Northern Beaches of Sydney, who may not have the time to travel an hour for a race. The NBDC allows those people to attend races at an area closer to them. Beginners are most certainly encouraged to come and try racing, every single person will be more than willing to provide information on this amazing hobby.
Our aircraft are high performance, high speed drones. They are typically quadcopters, which are multirotors with 4 motors. These motors are typically sized at 2207, driving a 5" propeller. These are power by high current ESCs and leading edge Lithium Polymer batteries that can sustain a continuous load of up to 80a and peak currents exceeding 200a. This is all controlled by a main board, the flight controller, which calculates values for each motor to keep the aircraft in the air, in literally microseconds. All of these electronics are mounted on a frame, which is typically designed to be strong yet lightweight and aerodynamic. This means that carbon fiber is a very good material for this. For control of the aircraft, a RF control link is required. Crossfire has greatly improved this area, with super low latency and a range of up to 100km. To see where we're going, we transmit video from a low latency camera, which means that it will not be HD but newer generations of CMOS can make it look HD. Although there are digital systems available, they are not yet allowed in races due to issues with timing and interference with current analog systems.
